Big News_KIPO Launches AI-Powered Digital Patent Examination System

On December 20, 2024, the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) announced the launch of the second-generation digital patent examination system, which supports functions such as artificial intelligence (AI) automated examination.

After the system upgrade, the reviewing parties can confirm and manage patent examination cases through the KIPO website and obtain fast and accurate examination services.

The construction of the digital patent examination system will last for three years (2023-2025); among them, KIPO invested 2.5 billion won in 2024. The main upgrade contents are as follows.

1. Anyone can easily and conveniently check the review case

After the system upgrade, the KIPO website supports one-time query of all documents and evidence materials of the review case, simplifying the previous process of confirming documents and materials separately.

In addition, relevant personnel can receive notifications via email, so that individuals without agents will not miss documents related to the case.

2. Provide high-quality digital patent examination services by strengthening psychological support and evidence management

In order to conduct patent examinations quickly, accurately and with high quality, KIPO has also strengthened the psychological support and evidence management system for examiners to improve the efficiency of examiners’ judgment during the examination process.

At the same time, when issuing certification documents, personal information can be automatically shielded, and users can more conveniently obtain certification documents that protect personal information security.

3. Apply AI and other emerging technologies to automate digital patent examination

KIPO has upgraded its automated review capabilities using AI and optical character recognition (OCR).

The automatic inspection scope of examination documents has been expanded to include 80 major examination documents and 18 reasons for rejection. The system can automatically extract necessary information from examination documents and drawings, thereby shortening the processing time of examination business.
